Fallout: New Vegas is a 2010 action role-playing game developed past Obsidian Entertainment and published past Bethesda Softworks. It was announced in April 2009 and released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation three, and Xbox 360 on October nineteen, 2010. A spin-off[i] [2] [3] of the master Fallout series, the game is fix in a post-apocalyptic open world environment that encompasses a region consisting of Arizona, California, and Nevada. Information technology is set in a world that deviated onto an alternate timeline thanks to Atomic Age technology, which somewhen led to a global nuclear apocalypse in the year 2077 in an effect referred to as "The Great War", caused by a major conflict between the U.Southward. and China over natural resource. The main story of New Vegas takes identify in the twelvemonth 2281, four years afterward the events of Fallout 3 and 204 years subsequently the bombs brutal. Information technology is not a direct sequel, but does feature the return of several elements constitute in Fallout 2.

Players take control of a character known every bit the Courier. While transporting a bundle across the Mojave Desert to the city of New Vegas, what used to be Las Vegas, the Courier is ambushed, robbed of the parcel, shot, and buried in a cemetery. Ultimately the Courier is dug out and recovers from their wound. The Courier then begins a journey to find their would-be killer and recover the package, makes friends and enemies amongst diverse warring factions, and ultimately becomes caught up in a conflict that will determine who controls New Vegas and the Mojave Wasteland.

New Vegas received positive reviews, with critics praising the game's writing, quests, and improved gameplay, though it was criticized for its glitches and bugs on launch. It was a commercial success, aircraft more than 5 one thousand thousand copies, and is estimated to have sold around 12 million copies worldwide. The game received a Gilt Joystick Award for "RPG of the Year" in 2011 and was nominated for 2 BAFTA Awards (All-time Strategy Game and Best Story), as well equally a NAVGTR Award for Supporting Performance in a Drama (Felicia 24-hour interval). Information technology has since obtained a cult following, with some critics referring to the game as the best in the Fallout series[iv] [5] as well equally i of the greatest RPGs of all time.[six] [vii] [8] [9] [ten]

Gameplay [edit]

Much like Fallout 3, players tin can switch from the first-person perspective, as shown hither, to a much improved third-person viewpoint in New Vegas.

While gameplay from Fallout 3 was retained for Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian Amusement worked upon providing the game with improvements upon existing elements while introducing some old and new features to the serial. Some improvements and new features are included. Combat is improved upon, with the V.A.T.Due south. system being updated with several new V.A.T.S.-specific attacks, and a number of kill animations existence made for several of the game's melee weapons. The response and accuracy given from weapons were also improved. Players tin can utilize the atomic number 26 sights on firearms, with the exception of sure larger guns and some energy weapons.[11] [12] [13] [14] The tertiary-person perspective in the game was redesigned to be more than "over the shoulder" than information technology had been in Fallout 3. The Character Creation section of the game was refined to take less time than Fallout three, with players able to skip the tutorials and go along across the Wasteland once their character is prepare. The option to make any last minute changes to their graphic symbol occurs when the player steps across the boundaries of the starting location of Goodsprings. More Perks were added to the game to provide greater options for improving the actor's characters upon leveling up, and perks that but added to skill values were removed. The player tin simply have i Perk every two levels instead of every level like in Fallout 3, in an effort to preclude players from condign too potent early on in the game. More than weapons were added to the game, including the 9mm Pistol, the Single Shotgun, Pulverization Charges, Dynamite, Trail Carbine, and Grenade Launcher, with each weapon added being intended to serve a specific and tactical role within the game.[14] The "Large Guns" and "Small Guns" skills are consolidated into one skill, "Guns", and the skill of Survival was added, adjusted from the first and second game'south Outdoorsman skill. In New Vegas, this skill affects how much wellness is restored by food and drink. Skills accept a larger effect on conversation choices; whether a dialogue selection volition succeed or fail is shown up front, and entirely dependent on Skill level, rather than both skill and run a risk as was the case in Fallout three.[13] Players tin can receive a temporary boost to a skill by reading a skill magazine corresponding to it, which tin can be found around the Mojave Wasteland or purchased from vendors, the furnishings of which can be further enhanced past certain Perks. Players tin gamble past visiting casinos across the wasteland and purchasing chips with i of the three currencies available. The games available at these casinos are blackjack, slots, or roulette, and success rate is dependent on the histrion'south Luck stat. Players can as well play a carte du jour game called Caravan, which was specifically designed for the game and has its own rules, and can be played with certain people outside of the casinos.[xv] [16]

Crafting and weapon customization [edit]

Although players could arts and crafts items in Fallout 3, options were limited to creating ane of viii unique weapons. With New Vegas, crafting was expanded to allow the creation of nutrient, drink, drugs, ammunition forth with unique weapons. Crafting can exist done at workbenches, reloading benches, hot plates and campfires, and require specific components every bit well as a sufficient skill level; for instance, cooking food at campfires requires the player to have a sufficient Survival skill level to practise so, and may crave plants that tin be harvested across the wasteland. Some special items cannot be made until their recipes/schematics are constitute. In addition to crafting, players can modify weapons with special firearm modifications, which may improve charge per unit of fire, magazine size, or add sights to allow for greater range and accuracy. Modifications for firearms often require either scavenging for them in the Mojave or purchasing them from vendors.[xi]

Reputation [edit]

Because of the large number of factions created for the game, developers reintroduced the reputation system that was get-go used in Fallout 2 and had been absent in Fallout 3. Much like the Karma system, which tracks a player's "proficient" and "bad" deeds, a actor's standing with a faction or settlement can change depending on how they interact with them and what decisions they brand. For example, if a thespian helps a faction or settlement, their reputation improves in all locations controlled by that faction or settlement; opting to impale their members or citizens or work against them will crusade a gain of infamy with that faction or settlement. Dissimilar the Karma system, any reputation fame or infamy gained is permanent and irreversible, also the NCR and Legion resetting infamy upon reaching a certain point in the game, and fame and infamy are completely split up values. The type of reputation the player has with each faction or settlement affects how not-role player characters (NPCs) behave towards them; a good reputation might make completing some quests easier, provide discounts with the faction or settlement'southward vendors, and cause faction members to offer gifts; a bad reputation may lead to the faction refusing to assistance the player, attacking them on sight, or sending assassins to gun them downward.[17]

Companions [edit]

Companions in New Vegas received far more depth than the companions from Fallout iii, through the employ of the Companion Bike and most companions offering a unique questline. Through the Wheel, players can switch a companion's tactics in combat, including their behavior and how they assail, too as dismiss them, treat them for injuries, access their inventory and talk with them. Players are capable of having 2 companions with them at any once – one humanoid and one not-humanoid. Companions can confer a unique Perk or advantage and take the opportunity to be improved by completing a special quest related to them.[fourteen] They can be sent directly to the Lucky 38 Presidential Suite upon beingness dismissed rather than returning to their original location. Each companion was intended to correspond a different style of combat. In that location are a full of 8 permanent companions, with six companions available only in their respective DLC worlds.

Hardcore manner [edit]

New Vegas introduced the boosted difficulty of Hardcore mode, which delivers more realism and intensity to the playing surround. While the standard adaptable difficulty level settings only touch on gainsay difficulty, Hardcore mode adds statistics and encourages the player to consider resource direction and combat tactics. Game managing director Josh Sawyer stated that the mode was inspired by several different Fallout 3 mods.[xviii] In this mode, the following occurs:[19] [20] All healing items, including food and water, do non heal the thespian instantly but work over a short period of fourth dimension. RadAway takes time to gradually decrease radiation poisoning, rather than instantly. Stimpaks can no longer heal crippled limbs. Players must either use Doctor's Numberless, slumber in an owned or rented bed, apply the chem Hydra, or visit a doctor to heal limbs. Ammunition has weight, limiting the corporeality that tin can be carried. Players must eat, drinkable, and sleep in order to avert starvation, dehydration, and exhaustion, respectively; failure to do so confers a steady decrease in certain skills and eventually leads to death if untreated. Companions tin can exist killed upon existence reduced to zero hit points, rather than losing consciousness. Completing the game on this way (from get-go to finish as the mode tin exist turned on at any point during the game) results in either an accomplishment (Xbox 360[21]/Steam[22]) or trophy (PlayStation three)[23] beingness awarded.

Plot [edit]

Setting [edit]

Flag of the New California Democracy, based on the Comport Flag

Fallout: New Vegas takes place during the year 2281 inside the region surrounding the sometime city of Las Vegas (now called "New Vegas"), around four years after the events of Fallout 3, and roughly around 204 years after the Great War of 2077. At the time the game begins, three major powers seek control over New Vegas and its surroundings – the New California Commonwealth (NCR), Caesar's Legion, and Mr. Business firm. Since their last appearance in Fallout ii, the NCR has become overextended and mismanaged, but their expansion eastwards has allowed them to gain control of the bulk of territories in the Mojave, with the only threat to their expansion coming from the slave-driving, Roman army-styled forces of Caesar's Legion, led past their leader Caesar (voiced by John Doman), who have conquered and united 86 tribes farther to the east, and plan to conquer New Vegas. Four years before the start of the game, both sides came into conflict at the Hoover Dam, a major landmark that supplies power to New Vegas,[thirteen] and which both sides seek control over. The battle resulted in a narrow victory for the NCR, only with Boulder City being leveled in the procedure. As both sides prepare for a second, inevitable conflict over the dam, Mr. Firm, a mysterious businessman who presides over New Vegas every bit its de facto leader with an army of "Securitron" security robots, too seeks command of the dam while ensuring neither side gains control, and is moving towards the last stages of his plans.

Much of the game takes place in the Mojave Wasteland, which encompasses parts of the one-time states of California, Nevada, and Arizona. Along with the 3 main factions, the region has a number of minor factions. These include the Boomers, an neutralist and xenophobic tribe of heavily armed former Vault dwellers who have taken shelter at Nellis Air Forcefulness Base of operations; the Powder Gangers, a vehement group of escaped convicts from the NCR Correctional Facility near Primm; the Keen Khans, a tribe of drug dealers and raiders descended from the remnants of the New Khans in Fallout 2; and the Alliance of Steel, technology-peckish remnants of the U.S. Army who are attempting to secure any technology that could cause significant harm. Along with the Hoover Dam and Nellis Air Force Base, the region has additional landmarks, including its own vaults and the HELIOS One solar energy found.[twenty]

Story [edit]

The protagonist is a courier working for the Mojave Express, a postal service that serves New Vegas and the surrounding Mojave Desert. The game begins every bit the Courier is ambushed by a mobster named Benny (voiced by Matthew Perry) en road to New Vegas to deliver a mysterious item known as the "Platinum Chip". Benny shoots the Courier in the caput and leaves them for dead by burying them, taking the Chip for himself. The Courier is then dug out and rescued by a Securitron named Victor (voiced by William Sadler) and brought dorsum to good health by Md Mitchell (voiced by Michael Hogan) in Goodsprings.[thirteen] The Courier embarks on a journeying across the Mojave Wasteland to locate and confront Benny and get the Platinum Chip.

The game proceeds according to the Courier's decisions and involves many unlike events, factions, and characters. The main storyline follows the Courier'southward pursuit of Benny to both settle the score and retrieve the Platinum Fleck. Along the way, the Courier encounters many groups of people with diverse problems that they can cull to help with, ignore, or otherwise sabotage, resulting in positive or negative karma. Eventually, subsequently finding Benny and the Fleck, the Courier finds themselves in the centre of a disharmonize betwixt 3 major factions: Caesar's Legion, a group of Roman-esque slavers, the New California Democracy (NCR), an expansionist democratic federation, and Mr. House (voiced by René Auberjonois), the enigmatic de facto ruler of New Vegas, in command of an army of Securitron robots that patrol the city. Each of the iii sides aims to command Hoover Dam, which is still operational and supplying the Southwest with power and make clean, not-irradiated water; thus, control of the dam means effective control of the region. It is revealed that Mr. Business firm, a human from before the Great War and surviving via a independent life back up sleeping accommodation, ordered the Platinum Scrap'south delivery the 24-hour interval of the war. The Chip is a data storage device with a program that tin can upgrade the Securitrons to a greater level of combat effectiveness, and was stolen by Benny as part of a scheme to take over House'south security and claim New Vegas for himself with the help of a reprogrammed Securitron named Yeah Man (voiced past Dave Foley), a scheme that the Courier can co-opt for themselves and keep.

The Courier is notified that Caesar'south Legion is attacking Hoover Dam, and they must take function to make up one's mind the outcome. As the Legion strikes the Dam, led past the fearsome Legate Lanius, the NCR defends its position under General Lee Oliver. Depending on the faction sided with up to the boxing, the Courier will either conquer the Dam for Caesar'southward Legion, defend information technology for the NCR, or connect the dam's systems to House's network and then either he or Yeah Man tin accept control and push both back. The game concludes with a narrated slideshow showing and explaining the results of the Courier's actions, the battle for Hoover Dam deciding the faction that comes to power over New Vegas and the Mojave, and the fates of the various other factions based on how the player negotiated with them and which of the major factions emerged dominant.

Endings [edit]

The actor faces a choice to determine the fate of the Mojave Wasteland.

  • Yes Man (Contained) – the Courier volition use Benny's reprogrammed Securitron named Aye Man to take over Mr. House'southward network and accept Hoover Dam for themselves. The Courier must either convince General Oliver, and the Legate, to withdraw, or they tin can kill them instead. The Courier volition go on to accept command of Hoover Dam, while ensuring the independence of the Mojave from the NCR, Caesar's Legion, and Mr. House.
  • Mr. Firm – siding with Mr. Firm will lead the Courier to enter the control room in Hoover Dam and install the override flake in guild to power the Securitron Ground forces. The Courier must either convince General Oliver, and the Legate, to stand downwardly or they can kill them instead. Mr. Firm and his Securitrons drive both the NCR and the Legion out of Hoover Dam, taking command of it, while still running New Vegas according to House'south vision.
  • Caesar'southward Legion – siding with the Legion will lead the Courier to assistance assault Hoover Dam. The Courier must enter Oliver's compound where they take the pick to either convince him to retreat for the sake of his men, or they can kill him instead. The Legion seizes Hoover Dam, forcing the NCR to retreat, allowing them to gain command over New Vegas and the rest of the Mojave Wasteland.
  • New California Commonwealth – siding with the NCR will lead the Courier to defend Hoover Dam from the Legion. The Courier will then lead an attack on the Legate's campsite where they accept the choice to either convince the Legate to peacefully withdraw, or they tin impale him. The NCR emerges from the battle decisively triumphant and annexes New Vegas forth with the entire Mojave Wasteland.

Development [edit]

"Welcome to New Vegas" promotion at PAX 2010

In 2004, Bethesda Softworks purchased the license to develop and publish Fallout 3, also every bit an option to create two sequels, from Interplay Entertainment.[24] Iii years later they bought the Fallout intellectual property.[25] Bethesda abased the original gameplay style of previous Fallout titles; instead of an isometric game with action betoken/turn-based combat, Bethesda'southward Fallout 3 was a fully 3D game with real-time combat likewise equally the activity signal-based Five.A.T.Due south. system.[26] [27] [28]

Fallout 3 was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 2008,[26] and Bethesda commissioned a sequel. With their own developers busy working on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Bethesda reached out to Obsidian Entertainment, a company founded past several former members of Coaction'due south original Fallout developers Black Isle Studios, to develop the game. Bethesda and Obsidian decided to create a game that would continue the "West Coast" story rather than the plot of Fallout 3.[26] [29] Bethesda rejected Obsidian's thought to gear up the game between the events of Fallout two and Fallout three, but they did approve of setting the game in Las Vegas.[29] [thirty]

Fallout: New Vegas was appear in April 2009.[31] Obsidian'due south development squad included quondam Coaction/Black Isle employees Josh Sawyer as director and Chris Avellone as a author and director of the game's downloadable content.[18] [32] The plot of New Vegas takes heavy inspiration from the original Fallout iii that Black Island developed, usually known by its codename "Van Buren",[33] which Sawyer also directed prior to its counterfoil.[34] The near notable example is the inclusion of Caesar's Legion, a faction originally created for Van Buren.[33] [35] Obsidian included other factions from previous Fallout games and avoided writing whatever faction every bit entirely good or evil, but instead as potential rivals depending on what path the role player decided to pursue.[33] [35]

The game had a somewhat short development wheel of 18 months.[36] New Vegas is similar to Fallout 3, in that both games use the Gamebryo engine, yet it improved on the previous installment'due south source code, with some graphics rendering improvements and new art assets, while reworking the engine to accommodate the extra lights and effects of the Las Vegas Strip.[35] [37] Obsidian were unfamiliar with the Gamebryo engine and had to asking the help of an Oblivion modder named Jorge Salgado.[38] Obsidian refined the real-time shooting mechanics and added iron-sights aiming to make playing without V.A.T.Due south. a more viable pick than information technology was in Fallout three.[34] [39] 1 PC version of the game relies on Steamworks for online functions, such as achievements and cloud save storage, as well equally digital rights management (DRM).[forty] A version without DRM was made available past GoG.com on June 1, 2017.[41]

Producer Jason Bergman announced the interest of several actors, including Ron Perlman as the game's narrator and Wayne Newton equally radio DJ "Mr. New Vegas".[42] He confirmed that the game would include voice acting from Matthew Perry, Zachary Levi, Kris Kristofferson, Danny Trejo, Michael Dorn and Felicia Mean solar day. The squad brought on casting director and phonation producer Timothy Cubbison to oversee the actor selection and vocalization production. The game established the new record for the most lines of dialogue in a single-player action role-playing game. New Vegas contains around 65,000 lines of dialogue, chirapsia its predecessor and previous tape holder Fallout 3 which contained 40,000 lines of dialogue.[43]

Fallout 3 composer Inon Zur composed the score.[44] It features iii major in-game radio stations, spanning several genres of music in the radio waves: state, bluegrass, popular music from the 1940s and 1950s, jazz and classical.[14] Each station has a set track list which repeats randomly.[45] Music from the beginning ii Fallout games, composed by Mark Morgan, is used in the game also.[46] [47]

Critics praised the gameplay improvements and expanded content over Fallout three, while criticizing familiarity and technical issues. As of November viii, 2010, the game had shipped 5 million copies worldwide,[110] achieving revenue of $300 million.[111] Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, a market research business firm, estimates that the game had sold 11.half-dozen meg copies worldwide past 2015.[112]

IGN 's Keza MacDonald praised the game's script, but criticized the grapheme models and facial animation every bit "wooden and unbelievable".[93] [94] Eurogamer commented that "Obsidian has created a totally compelling world and its frustrations pale into insignificance compared to the immersive, obsessive experience on offer. But similar the scorched scenery that provides its epic backdrop, New Vegas is huge and sprawling, sometimes gaudy, even downright ugly at times – but always effortlessly, shamelessly entertaining."[95] Co-ordinate to GameSpot 's Kevin VanOrd, the game's "familiar rhythm will delight fans of the serial, and the huge world, expansive quests, and hidden pleasures will accept [the players] itching to run into what other joys you might uncover. However, as fourth dimension wears on, the abiding glitches invade about every element of the game and somewhen grow boring."[97]

Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann reviewed Fallout: New Vegas for the Xbox 360 positively, despite its many crashes, bugs, and glitches. Gerstmann wrote: "When I reverberate on the experience, I'll probably think about the times the game locked up on me or broke in a dozen other crazy ways first, before thinking nearly the corking world and the objectives that fill it. If you were able to look past the bug that plagued Fallout iii and Oblivion before it, New Vegas will eventually show you a existent expert fourth dimension."[113] 1UP.com 'due south Mike Nelson wrote "On one hand, information technology feels like I can recommend this to any fan of the Fallout series. I unmarried these fans out because they're willing to forgive silly bugs like coming together characters who walk into walls or occasionally float in mid-air. These fans realize that the game as a whole is greater than the sum of pocket-size graphical anomalies. On the other paw, I but can't ignore or forgive the game for crashing on me when I walk around the Mojave Wasteland; or for quests that merely tin't be completed because of a game glitch; or for making my companions disappear when I need them the most during a battle. These are some of the well-nigh frustrating bugs I accept ever encountered with any game, especially when attached to a serial that I deeply bask."[92]

Reappraisal [edit]

Despite its technical problems at launch, in the years since its release Fallout: New Vegas has been critically acclaimed, with praise given to its story, function-playing elements and improvements on its predecessor.[114] [115] In 2020, Eurogamer'due south Wesley Yin-Poole wrote "While it suffered a raft of technical bug – every bit about of the games built on Bethesda'south RPG engine did at the time – its reputation has only grown more positive over the last decade, and it is now considered one of, if not the all-time Fallout game."[116] Emma Kent wrote in 2019 that "it felt like even the smallest story was advisedly crafted to maintain interest and deliver a rewarding kicker" and that "on the macro scale, New Vegas took a more than serious tone past weaving a complex ability struggle that mirrors many current real-world conflicts."[117] At the end of 2019, Den of Geek ranked Fallout: New Vegas as the twelfth-best game of the decade, with writer Matthew Byrd describing the game as "the glorious comeback of [...] more complex RPG elements. Developer Obsidian fought confronting a buggy engine and a tight product schedule to turn in an RPG adventure that is all about navigating the possibilities and burdens of player agency in a globe where information technology often feels like you can't properly predict the consequences of your decisions. It'southward a true role-playing game that takes place in a world you wouldn't desire to live in merely can't help but be engrossed past."[118]
